Colombia is a a free country in religion according with its national constitution. The first religion of the country by number is the Roman Catholic Church by tradition since the Spaniard Colony. It was also the religion of the State until 1991 when a new constitution established the free of cult. In Colombia there are almost all the Christian groups and churches. They can be found in almost all the urban centers. There are also groups of Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hinduisms and Animists. The indigenous peoples and some Afro-Colombians practice their own natural religions. There are also groups of persons who do not practice any religion. Many Catholic Colombians do not practice their faith but they follow it by circumstantial traditional moments like Baptism of children, weddings and funerals. The Catholic leaders in Colombia are very influential in the life of the country, specially those who are entitled as bishops. There are some Non-Catholic but Christian groups that have their own politic party and have representation in the Congress of the Republic. Although Muslims are minority, Colombia has the biggest Mesquite of South America in Maico, Department of La Guajira, north of the country. |
