Politics in Colombia

Colombia is a Republic of a single State and it is a democracy. The power is divided in three branches:

  • The Congress of the Republic that is divided also in the Senate and the House of Representatives. This is the legislative life of the country.

  • The Supreme Court of Justice is the statement that guarantees the fulfillment of the national law. The Constitutional Court vigils the Political Constitution of Colombia. The actual Constitution of Colombia is the one that was declared in 1991 after a Constitutional Assembly. It reformed the Political Constitution of 1886.

  • The President of the Republic and his/her cabinet of Ministers is the one who lead the executive power. There is also a Vice-President elected also by democratic vote. The President of Colombia is elected democratically for a period of four years and recently there was a Constitutional reform to allow that a President can be re-elected for a second term. The Residence of the President of Colombia is in Casa de Nariño in Bogotá.

  • The departments have a same political and democratic structure at their level. There is the Departmental Assembly (Asamble departamental) that is the legislative power, the Tribunal of Justice and the governor of the department. The municipalities have also their local structure: Municipal Council, Municipal Tribunal and the major.
