Colombia is a Republic of a
single State and it is a democracy. The power is divided
in three branches:

The Congress of the Republic
that is divided also in the Senate and the House of
Representatives. This is the legislative life of the country.

The Supreme Court of Justice
is the statement that guarantees the fulfillment of the national law.
The Constitutional Court vigils the Political
Constitution of Colombia. The actual Constitution of
Colombia is the one that was declared in 1991 after
a Constitutional Assembly. It reformed the Political
Constitution of 1886.

The President of the Republic
and his/her cabinet of Ministers is the one who lead
the executive power. There is also a Vice-President
elected also by democratic vote. The President of
Colombia is elected democratically for a period of
four years and recently there was a Constitutional
reform to allow that a President can be re-elected
for a second term. The Residence of the President of
Colombia is in Casa de Nariño in Bogotá.

The departments have a same
political and democratic structure at their level.
There is the Departmental Assembly (Asamble
departamental) that is the legislative power,
the Tribunal of Justice and the governor of the
department. The municipalities have also their local
structure: Municipal Council, Municipal Tribunal and
the major.

By tradition, Colombia
had two main parties: Partido Liberal and Partido
Conservador. After the new Constitution of 1991
there were a wider offer of political parties
created by ideological movements, religious groups,
indigenous, Afro-Colombian and farmer leaders and
many others. Some groups that were reintegrated from
their arm activities conformed their political
parties. The following is the list of the actual
