From the National Front to 2001

From smugglers and the request of cocaine and marihuana from USA in the 70´s the mafias began to develop their criminal business.  By the 80´s they were powerful and corrupted many statements of the political and social life of Colombia. The country was featured like the first producer of cocaine in the world and its cities like the most violent of the planet. International pressure led to a war declaration by the government on mafias in Colombia after the assassination of the presidential candidate and charismatic political leader Antonio Galán. The war on mafias was especially violent during the government of César Gaviria and the most powerful leader of the Medellín´s Cartel, Pablo Escobar (who was the responsible for the assassination of Galán under the advance of Santofimio Botero), surrender to Gaviria but he was killed soon after he escaped from his luxury prison in 1991. During the time of Gaviria the country celebrated the creation of the Constitution of 1991, with a decentralized political scheme. In this period Colombia starts to open its economy.

The advance of the guerrillas was cut by the creation of the paramilitary groups with the support of many military factions, police, landowners and many political statements. The fighting among guerrillas and paramilitary groups generated a big humanitarian crisis with genocide killings, displacement of farmers, extortion, kidnapping and many other events that worsened the problem of human rights in Colombia. Paramilitary groups displaced guerrillas from many areas, but became at their time a humanitarian problem due to their cruelty and the impunity for the links and open protection of many authorities.

During the government of president Andrés Pastrana, there was a serious intention of peace dialogue with the Farc. Among the conditions for the dialogue was the opening of a demilitarized are for the guerrilla. The dialogues were suspended as soon as the period of the president ended and the Colombians elected a new president with a strong vision of the Colombian conflict: Álvaro Uribe, president since 2001.
