Melitón Rodríguez

He was born in Medellín in 1875 and is considered one of the pioneers of photography in Colombia, although there are works since the 1850´s. His works keep a great value in history, especially in what concerns Medellín and the Antioquia State. He made images of the daily life, several characters from simple peasants to rich industrialists and sites that give today an idea of the development of the Colombian city. He created a company of photography with his brother Horacio Marino that they called "Rodríguez y Hermanos", but it became "Melitón Rodríguez e Hijos" in 1899. He was also a pupil of the Antioquian artist Francisco Antonio Cano.

In 1904 he received the aware of the Saint Vincent Society and the Artistic Center of Medellín for his work and he was recognized in New York for his photography "Los zapateros". In 1910 he participated in a National Exposition and got a special recognition. His work are often used in modern newspapers, magazines, documents and books to illustrate history, architecture, anthropology, sociology and many other areas related with Colombia. Even if Melitón left hardly his country and his region, his work is admired internationally. He died in 1942.

One of the last pictures of Don Pepe Sierra (1848 - 1921) the famous rich Paisa entrepreneur of the second part of the 19th century in Colombia. Don Pepe Sierra became a model of business and even a sector of Bogotá has his name. This picture of Melitón was taken a year before one of the richest men of Colombia died.

"The Elder and the Girl", a photography of 1921.
