Leo Matiz Espinoza

He was born in the same birth town of the journalist and writer Gabriel García Márquez, Aracataca (Magdalena State), in 1917. He is considered one of the most important Colombian photographers and his fame was known in countries like Venezuela, Mexico and United States. He worked for Lige Magazine, Rider´s Digets, Revista Norte and for Palacio de Miraflores, the House of Government of Venezuela. In 1949 he was in Bogotá when the presidential candidate Jorge Eliecer Gaitán was killed (April 9th) and it caused El Bogotazo. During the riots he was hurt, but his pictures became of a great historical value. His photography "Pavo real del mar" is considered the best Colombian picture and was admired internationally, especially in Japan. In the 1950´s he was among the ten best photographers of the world.

Matiz received several recognitions to his work in different nations like "Gentleman of the Art and Literature" of France in 1995. He died in Bogotá in 1998 in a very simple life and surrounded by a deep affection of his family, friends and many admirers.
