Colombia is a multi-ethnic country with several disticnt groups, many of them with their own languages, lifestyle, cultural heritage, religions and customs. Even if the main cultural group, the Hispanic, is the biggest, it has many sub-cultural groups. Those sub-cultures can be influenced by the region, the origin of the people and their local history.

 

Cultural regions

Colombians can be distinguished in the following regional groups with their own traditions:

 

  1. Costeños: The people of the Caribbean litoral region, the north of Colombia.
  2. Paisas: The people of the states of Antioquia (the mountains), Risaralda, Caldas, Quindío, the north of Valle del Cauca and the west of Tolima.
  3. Llaneros: The inhabitants of Los Llanos Orientales (Easter Planes); they share culture with the Venezuelan planes.
  4. Santandereanos: The inhabitants of the states of Santander and Norte de Santander.
  5. Raizales: The inhabitants of the islands of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina in the Caribbean basin.
  6. Vallunos: The people of Valle del Cauca.
  7. Tolimenses: The people of Tolima and Huila.
  8. Pastusos: The people of Nariño.
  9. Cundiboyasences: The people of the states of Cundinamarca and Boyacá.
  10. Amazonians: The inhabitants of the Amazon basin.
  11. Afro-Colombians: They live in the Pacific litoral.
  12. Indo-Colombians: The different indigenous groups in all the territory.
