Latin America is reducing poverty, Cepal

Cepal. The Latin American and Caribbean Economical Commission reported this month that poverty has been reduced 17 points in the last decade in the region - 48.4% to 31.4% -, while indigence was reduced in 10.3 points - 22.6 % to 12.3%. According to AméricaEconomía, both numbers are the lowest in the two past decades. This year, poverty will fall to 30.4 percent, but indigence will increase slightly to 12.8 percent, said Ms. Alicia Bárcena,Cepal's secretary executive.

Durban. Countries meeting in this South African city, have delivered a breakthrough on the future of the international community as response to climate change, while recognizing the urgent need to raise their collective level of ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to keep the average global temperature rise below two degrees Celsius. Colombia, represented in the meeting by Minister of Environment Frank Pearl and the director of the Colombian Institute of Environment (IDEAM) Ricardo Lozano, has a low rate of carbon emission, while being one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change.
