Education in Colombia

Colombia has a high level of scholarity, although the superior education would need more investment. Social crisis cause the scape of young talents abroad. However there are several institutions to support the rising of new talents and promotion of research and investigation in different arear like Colciencias or the program for superior scholaship like Icetex.

Basic education

It consists in about ten years. The child starts with Pre-Basic School (Pre-escolar), five yeard more in Basic School and four years in Middle School. The education in this period is subsidiated by the State. Several private centers attend the main cities.

High School and Vocational Education

It consists in two years (10th and 11th grades) with emphasys in a technical skill area that the youth chooses. At the end of the 11th grade, male students have to give a service to the nation in the Army (one year), the National Police as "Auxiliars" or any other services established by the State. It gives to young men the "Military Card", a condition to apply to any university. 

Technical and Superior education

There are several institutions to provide technical education (polytechnics) or superior education (colleges and universities). The superior education is not subsidiated by the State, so the families have to run with the costs of the education, something that becomes difficult for many families. There are programs to facilitate it such as scholarships and loans (Icetex). 

Most of the universities are located in big cities, although in the last decades there is a tendency to descentralized superior institutions with the opening of branches in rural regions. 

Badget for investigation in the Colombian universities, including the private ones, still low in comparisson with other countries. In this case, international agreements of the universities with foreign superior universities of rich countries have proved to be useful for the support of scientists investigation and promotion of young talents in Colombia.
