Countries around Colombia


Colombia, a South American country, has international borders with nations of three American regions: South America, Central America and Antilles.

By South America with four countries:

Venezuela: 2,219 kilometers of international border at the North-East of Colombia. The main international gate is in Cúcuta (Norte de Santander State) connecting with San Cristóbal ( Tachira State) in the Simon Bolívar International Bridge. It is possible to go by land from Bogotá to Caracas. The Colombo-Venezuelan border is the busiest international border in the Americas.

Agreements: "López de Mesa - Gil Borges", 20th August 1920. 

Other international gates: Maicao (Guajira State) - Paraguaipoa (Venezuela). Arauca City (Arauca State) - El Cantón (Venezuela). Puerto Carreño (Vichada State) - Puerto Paez (Venezuela).   

Interesting places: Historical sites in Norte de Santander and Tachira states; Maicao in Guajira State and the Cocuy Stone in the joining of Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil.

Brasil: 1,615 kilometers of international border at the South - East of Colombia. The border is all in the Amazon Rain Forest. The main international gate is Leticia City (Amazon State).

Agreements: "Vásquez Cobo - Martins", 24th April 1907; "García Ortiz - Marabeira", 15th November 1928.

Perú: 1,626 kilometers at the south-east of Colombia. The main international gate is also Leticia City, being this spot the joining of the three South American nations. There are other poblations along the Amazon and Putumayo River bordering Peru. All the border is in the Amazon Rain Forest. 

Agreements: "Lozano - Salomon", 24th March 1922. "Rio de Janeiro Protocol", 24th May 2934.

Ecuador: 587 kilometers of border at the south-west of Colombia. The main international gate is Ipiales (Nariño State) - Tulcán (Ecuador) in the Andean region. It is possible to travel by land Bogotá - Quito by the Pan American Road. 

Agreements: "Suárez - Muñoz Vernaza", 15th July 1916.

Interesting to see: volcanoes, La Cocha Lake, Las Lajas Cathedral.  

With Central America with five countries

Panama: 266 kilometers of international land border. There is not an international gate, since the Darien Forest avoid any road. Going to Panama from Colombia is possible by sea from Buenaventura, Turbo, Cartagena de Indias and Barranquilla. 

Agreements: "Vélez - Victoria", 20th August 1920.

Sea international borders

Costa Rica: In both oceans. The "Fernández - Facio" Agreement in the Atlantic and the "Lloreda - Gutierrez" Agreement in the Pacific. 

Honduras: In the Atlantic, the shorter international border of Colombia with a foreign territory. The "Ramírez - López" Agreement. 

Nicaragua:  In the Atlantic. The San Andres, Provindencia and Santa Catalina Archipelago State of Colombia has border with Nicaragua. The "Esguerra - Barcenas" Agreement of 1928. Nicaragua claimed the Archipelago but the sovereignty was ratified to Colombia in 2008 by the International Tribunal of The Hague. 

With the Antilles with three countries by sea

Jamaica: The "Sanin - Robertson" Agreement of 1893.

Haiti: The "Lievano - Brutus" Agreement of 1978.

Dominican Republic: The "Lievano - Jiménez" Agreement of 1978.
