1949 to National Front

Instability began again with the assassination of the popular liberal leader Jorge Eliecer Gaitán in 1949. His assassination caused El Bogotazo and a civil war named The Violence. General Rojas Pinilla took power in 1953 for a short time. Democracy was reestablished and women got the right to vote in 1954. In this time the television began transmissions in Colombia. In 1968 the violence led the main opponents (Liberals and Conservatives) to a bilateral agreement know as the "National Front". The agreement was not joined by all the factions and Liberal and Communist groups created the guerrillas that still today like Farc and EPL.
