1888 - 1949 The liberal political scheme of the "United States of Colombia" was to be changed by a conservative one led by another prominent president of the Colombian 19th century: Rafael Nuñez who ended the political instability with the foundation of the Constitution of 1886. This Constitution was based in a Centralist scheme, abolished the federal states and created the centralist ones ("departamentos") and ruled over the democratic life of Colombia. This Constitution was to endure until 1991 and created the characteristics of what is politics in Colombia today. The opposition between centralists and federalists were replaced by their political descendants as conservatives and liberals who were to be protagonists in the civil wars to come for the next century. The first war of the planet during the 20th century was in Colombia thanks to their oppositions in what is known as the "War of the Thousand Days". The most notorious consequence was the Separation of Panama in 1903. At the end of the 19th century began also the Antioquian Colonization, that built one of the most important economic axes of the country even today with the coffee plantations. Many works of infrastructure where built during the first decades of the 20th century like roads, railways and ports. It was also the time of Massacre of the Banana Plantations in which the Fruit Company was involved. The only international war of Colombia against other nation was with Peru in 1930 for the sovereignty of the Amazon Rainforest. In this time Colombia signed many other agreements with its neighbors to define its boarders.
