Durban Summit on Climate Change agreed a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol

Durban. Countries meeting in this South African city, have delivered a breakthrough on the future of the international community as response to climate change, while recognizing the urgent need to raise their collective level of ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to keep the average global temperature rise below two degrees Celsius. Colombia, represented in the meeting by Minister of Environment Frank Pearl and the director of the Colombian Institute of Environment (IDEAM) Ricardo Lozano, has a low rate of carbon emission, while being one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change.

Vallejo is candidate to the Cervantes Award
Madrid - 12.01.2011. The name of the Colombian writer Fernando Vallejo is in the list of candidates to receive this year the Cervantes Award, one of the most important literary ones of the Spanish word. Other Spanish authors that could get the award are Nicaraguan Ernesto Cardenal, 86, and Chilean Nicanor Parra. The award was created in 1975 by the Ministry of Culture of Spain and it gives 125,000 euros to the winner to recognize a writer that, with his/her work, has contributed to enrich the Hispanic legacy. Cepal. The Latin American and Caribbean Economical Commission reported this month that poverty has been reduced 17 points in the last decade in the region - 48.4% to 31.4% -, while indigence was reduced in 10.3 points - 22.6 % to 12.3%. According to AméricaEconomía, both numbers are the lowest in the two past decades. This year, poverty will fall to 30.4 percent, but indigence will increase slightly to 12.8 percent, said Ms. Alicia Bárcena,Cepal's secretary executive.

Bogotá. Colombia produced 939,895 barrels of petrol per day in October, reported Dinero Magazine, a 17.4 percent increase if it is compared with the October 2010's production. Ecopetrol showed the biggest production (36%) with 322,718 barrels. Other petrol companies in the ranking were Meta Petroleum Limited in the Pacific region with 195,930 barrels, Occidental de Colombia with 74,161 barrels, Mansarovar Energy (34,042 b.), Equion Energy (33,828 b.), Petrominerales Colombia (32,786 b.), Hocol (32,486 b.), Petrobras Colombia Limited (29,062 b.), Perenco Colombia Limited (21,543 b.) and Canacol Energy (21,510 b.) Dinero noted that standing companies like Gran Tierra Energy, Petromagdalena and C&C Energía were not included in the ranking. The areas with more production are Rubiales, Castilla, Chichimene and Quifa, all in the Department of Meta that became the first Colombian petrol producer with 430 thousand barrels per day.
